Helen Elizabeth Sigurbjorg Walker (née DeLaronde)
January 23, 1935 – January 18, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Elizabeth Sigurbjorg Walker (née DeLaronde) on January 18, 2026, in Selkirk, Manitoba, at the age of 90. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Walker; her parents, Joseph and Solveig (Sylvia) DeLaronde; her brother, Joseph DeLaronde Jr. and her daughter-in-law, Diane Walker (née Baczewich). She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Joanne Ksionzek (Wayne), Diane Wark (Tom), and Pat Sareault (Robert), and by her son, Chris Walker. She will also be fondly remembered by her 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Helen was born on January 23, 1935, on Hecla Island, Mb, before moving with her family to Selkirk at the age of 12. She lived her life surrounded by many cousins, nieces and nephews, with whom she shared close bonds, happy memories and stories that she cherished throughout her life. She married the love of her life, George Walker, on November 7, 1953, and together they made their home in Petersfield, Mb where they raised their family and lived a busy farm life. Helen was deeply involved in her community and worked at Booth Fisheries, served as a 4‑H sewing leader, and was a long‑time member of the Petersfield Community Club. She was also well known as a cook at the Petersfield Hotel and the infield booth at the Selkirk Fair and Rodeo.
Later in life, Mom made her home at the Selkirk Lions Centennial Centre, where she enjoyed bingo, card games, outings, and the companionship of many friends. She cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a deep love and passion for baking, sewing, knitting and crocheting, creating countless handmade items for family, friends, and others in need. Helen was known for her humour, practical wisdom, and her love of travel, and family adventures.
Mom faced illness with remarkable courage, grace, and selflessness, always thinking of others first. We will deeply miss her, and she will never be forgotten.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home (309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Mb). Guests are warmly invited to remain following the service for lunch and refreshments to share memories. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Petersfield Community Club, Arthritis Society of Canada or Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation.
